8 Stanley County High School Band
Members
are being recognized by the South Dakota High School Activities Association
Academic Achievement Team Award
for achieving or exceeding a grade point average of 3.0
for the Band Solo-Ensemble Group:

Jason C. (12-trumpet) - Austin B. (12- alto sax) - Sam O. (12- clarinet),
Kyla V. (12- bass clarinet) - Jaclyn B. (12-clarinet) - Cole O.
(11-baritone)
Bailey H. (10- clarinet) - Kane K. (9- trumpet)
This award provides proof and support to the many studies
that have been conducted on the correlation between
activities participation and student academic achievement.
This correlation provides "proof" that many high school students
can be overwhelmingly successful in academics
as well as participate in high school athletic and fine arts activities.
The SDHSAA believes that high school students learn in 2 distinct ways:
inside the classroom & outside the classroom
on the stage, athletic field or court, or other performance venue.
As a matter of fact, the various studies which have been conducted
indicate that fine arts & athletic activity participants
tend to have higher GPAs than non-participating students.
The SDHSAA Academic Achievement Team Award program
is designed to create a positive environment,
as well as an incentive,
to encourage school "teams" to have their members excel
both in the classroom and the activity.
This program can be used to help motivate students
towards academic excellence
and to promote academic encouragement from all "teammates".

Great job to all 22
students who participated in the show!

I am sooo proud of the following students.
We entered an art competition where each state
would have pieces of art in the Capital building
that is equivalent to the number of representatives that state has.
Obviously, we only have one representative
so one composition was hung in the Capital---IN WASHINGTON DC.
Then second place would be put in Stephanie Herseth's office in Washington DC.
We entered this competition and...
Brandi P. & Sara B. TIED for second place,
so both of them with be in Hersheth's office.
PLEASE congratulate these girls.
We have worked INCREDIBLY HARD to win an award like this!!
How amazing is it that this is a statewide competition and not only one,
but TWO of our girls won!

Sam O. is the 2009 South Dakota Miss Basketball.
Please make sure to tell her congratulations the next time you see her!
Also, her High School Jersey will be sent off
to Knoxville Tennessee
to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame to be hung in the "Ring of Honor."
This is a permanent placement and just another great representation
of Sam's hard work & dedication, The Stanley County School District,
The Ft. Pierre/Pierre Community, and The State of South Dakota!
Her jersey will be one of just over 100 that hang in the Ring of Honor
at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame!
Again, a big congrats to Sam on an unbelievable High School Career in
basketball!!!
Finally, Sam beat the Howard Wood Dakota Relays
High Jump record
this weekend, with a Jump of 5' 9.75."0
The ole record of 5' 9.5" had stood for the past 32 years.
The overall state record is 5' 10.25"
and Sam almost cleared that down at Howard Wood.
To put it in perspective,
the College High Jump was won with a jump of 5' 7"
at the same meet, this weekend.
Respectfully and a Very Proud Buffalo,
Guy Hunter, A.D. |
